Austria: An Abundant Variety of Locations

Generations everywhere have enjoyed THE SOUND OF MUSIC, one of the most successful musicals ever made, which was filmed in the city of Salzburg and the idyllic province of the same name. Equally memorable, Orson Welles’ classic, THE THIRD MAN, has branded powerful images of Vienna on the minds of audiences, such as the magical Giant Ferris Wheel and the dark and chilling tunnels of the city’s sewer system.

Austria’s great variety of landscapes and its architecture, the abundant flora and fauna all offer an attractive variety of film locations – from snow-topped mountain peaks, to fairytale woods, crystal clear lakes and rivers, meadows and rolling hills. In the midst of these locations, we find historic palaces and castles, monumental cloisters, regal manor houses, and rustic farmhouses which have, time and again, served as film locations. Next to these more traditional settings, vibrant urban areas also offer a great selection of locations featuring modern and postmodern architecture.

Historic and modern locations

The Austrian National Tourist Office and several Regional Tourist Offices make their photo archives with thousands of location photos of landscapes, villages, cities, art, culture, tradition, architecture, people, etc. available to production companies.

The online platform Wild.Media makes available a wide spectrum of locations of Austria’s nature (currently in German only).

Archives and Libraries

Austria’s archives and libraries contain hundreds of thousands of paintings, portraits and copper engravings, which can be helpful research tools for historic films. Many items can be searched by geographical area.

The Federal Department of Historic Preservation is responsible for insuring that the rules and regulations protecting historic buildings are observed. While the department does not manage any of these buildings, they offer their assistance in finding historic buildings as film locations.
