Film Funding
Austrian investment in the film industry
In order to enable an independent film industry to operate in Austria, the federal government and regional governments have created film funds, which offer financial support, in particular for the production of feature films, television films, and documentaries. Funding from national and regional governments amounted to € 41.42 million in 2008.
Under certain conditions, also international film projects within the areas of feature films, TV and documentary films receive funding. Some funds stipulate the participation of an Austrian co-producer, who is responsible for the submission of the application for funding. If no contacts with Austrian producers exist, Location Austria will act as mediator between foreign and domestic film production companies.
Further information concerning the development of co-production projects with Austrian production companies can be found in the chapter Film Production in Austria. In some of the provinces, funding support is not tied to a co-production with an Austrian production company. Pre-requisites for funding include compliance with funding guidelines and hiring of local film crews.
